TORAY Group (Malaysia) supported Penang Bon Odori Festival 2014

The 18th Penang Bon Odori Festival on July 19 2014, a popular annual event on the Penang Tourism calendar has emerged as the biggest festival outside Japan, attracting an international crowd of more than 50,000 this year. As a key member and the current Chair of the Penang Japanese Association, TORAY Group (Malaysia) is once again a sponsor and strong supporter of the event, like in the previous years. Officiating the function at the Esplanade, Penang Chief Minister Mr. Lim Guan Eng commented that the annual festival has cemented Penang as a model city which promotes and preserves local and international culture. The Penang State Government is happy that long-term Japanese residents who are working and living in Pennag has increased from 1,600 to 2,300 presently. Also present at the function was Mr. Noda, the Consul-General of Japan in Penang and other State dignities. The Bon Odori festival showcased many Japanese cultural and traditional performances like folk dances and drum performances. For the first time, a “Miss Yukata’ beauty contest was organised. Numerous Japanese and local food as well as game stalls were also set up, including the Japanese traditional game “goldfish scooping stall” manned by some of our Toray Group’s members. They really had a great time interacting with the local Penangnites as well as the Japanese residing in Penang. The highlight of the festival was unquestionably the fireworks display which commenced sharp at 10pm. The colourful fireworks brightened up the night sky of the Esplanade, to the enlightenment of the wild cheering crowds. The Bon Odori Festival 2014 was indeed a great success and a night to remember.
