A sustainable world, humanity and the future of the humankind are among the issues focused on by USM. Based on these over-arching principles, USM has been selected by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to implement the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) under its auspices. As one of the four Higher Institutions of Learning recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education as a Research Intensive University, USM offers educational and research opportunities to both students and staff.
One of the key elements in the development of academic excellence at USM is the establishment of its research centres and units. The donation from TORAY Group (Malaysia)’s will enable USM to build a new four-storey “TORAY USM KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER CENTRE” at its main campus in Penang. The Local Knowledge Programme was initiated by the University in October 2010 to promote, protect and salvage the local culture, traditions, heritage, environments and other related issues that are nearly forgotten by today’s modern society. Besides serving as a Knowledge Repository, the new knowledge centre, expected to be completed by 2015, will provide facilities for graduate research as well as integration and networking of local and international researchers.
“Toray’s corporate philosophy is, “Contributing to society through the creation of new value with innovative ideas, technologies and products.” It is our belief that education, knowledge enhancement and human resource development play key roles towards the betterment of the community and in nation building. A knowledgeable society will surely give one the edge in today’s very competitive global environment. For Malaysia to achieve its Vision 2020, it is essential that talented human capital are developed and nurtured. We are fortunate that many outstanding graduates from Universiti Sains Malaysia are currently working in our group of companies. Toray is therefore, honoured to partner with USM to expand its research facilities and capabilities which will further endorse the University’s position as a leading centre of excellence in the region,” said Mr A. Nikkaku, President of Toray Japan.
Welcoming the donation, the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato’ Omar Osman said, “We are delighted that Toray Group (Malaysia) has chosen to support the University with this substantial gift which will benefit society through new advances in research and retention of local knowledge. We are proud to be working together with Toray Group whose generosity and commitment will help to increase the speed of development of our Knowledge Transfer Programme which we hope will achieve major impacts in the coming years whilst establishing a lasting legacy.”
