Mangrove Trees Planting by Toray Plastics (Malaysia) (TPM)

As part of the Company’s CSR initiatives to preserve the environment and natural habitats, TPM organized a Mangrove Tree Planting on the 12th December 2015, jointly with Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association (PIFWA)’s Education Centre at Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal, Penang. TPM’s twenty-four members’ team, led by MD Mr. T. Takayama was welcomed by the Chairman of PIFWA, Mr Ilias Bin Shafie who hosted the Group to a simple breakfast on arrival. After the speeches delivery by both Mr. Ilias and Mr Takayama and before the actual planting, the TPM team was led to some mangrove zones where previous planting activities were carried out by other organizations and local fishermen. Through this planting project, members are now more aware of the vital role played by mangrove swamp in land and sea conservation. Besides preventing land erosion, mangrove trees help to shield possible disasters brought about by tsunami and cyclones. More importantly, mangrove swamp acts as breeding and nursery grounds for a variety of marine animals and harbours a variety of life forms like invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. All in all, some 150 mangrove trees were successfully planted during the half-day program. Before departure, Mr Takayama handed a cash contribution of RM5,250 to PIFWA, to build additional 50 feet wooden pedestrian bridge for use by the visitors. It was indeed a fruitful outing for everyone.
