Toray Increases Carbon Fiber TORAYCA® and
TORAYCA® Prepreg Supply for Airbus
Toray Industries, Inc. （headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Akihiro Nikkaku; hereinafter referred to as "Toray"） today announced that its TORAYCA® prepreg with high strength and intermediate modulus carbon fiber T800S has been approved as a material for the primary structure of the A380 aircraft by Airbus S.A.S. （headquarters: Blagnac, France; hereafter referred to as “Airbus”）, and Toray has started supplying the material to the Airbus plant in Germany. The A380 is the world’s largest, most spacious airliner and is designed to offer passengers the smoothest, quietest flight.
In May 2010, Toray signed a long-term basic supply agreement with Airbus Group S.E. （former EADS; headquarters: Leiden, Netherlands） to supply carbon fiber prepreg for aircraft applications primarily for Airbus S.A.S. and the approval of the TORAYCA® prepreg material is based on this agreement. Toray has been supplying carbon fiber TORAYCA® for Airbus aircraft, and this is the first time for Airbus to use TORAYCA® prepreg.
In addition, Toray is increasing the supply of its high performance carbon fiber TORAYCA® to the Airbus business. For instance, the fiber is selected for the fan case of PW1100G-JM engine made by Pratt & Whitney （headquarters: East Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.）. PW1100G-JM is the engine of the new single aisle aircraft A320neo, which was delivered for the first time in January, 2016. Moreover, high performance carbon fiber TORAYCA® has been adopted for the primary structure of A330neo.
Ever since TORAYCA® was selected for the secondary structure of A320 for the first time in 1970s, Toray has been supplying high quality, high performance carbon fibers for a wide range of Airbus aircraft such as the A320, A330, A350 XWB and A380. Toray continues to promote development of its materials for Airbus Group companies including for next-generation planes.
Under its medium-term management program Project AP-G 2016 launched in April 2014, Toray positions the carbon fiber composite material business as a Strategically Expanding Business that leads the Group’s profit expansion over a medium- to long-term. The company aims to globally expand the business led by the aircraft application by focusing its management resources on the business.
