On July 20 2013, the 17th Penang Bon Odori Festival, a popular annual event on the Penang Tourism calendar was held at the Esplanade. The event started with speeches by Mr. Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang, Mr. Danny Law Heng Kiang, the State Executive Councilor for Tourism Development & Culture, and Mr. Noda, the Consul-General of Japan in Penang. The carnival-like atmosphere and lively performances amused both the local residents and tourists. It was a great success with some 50,000 people turned up this year. As a key member of the Penang Japanese Association, TORAY Group (Malaysia) has been sponsoring the event for many years now. Penang Bon Odori festival, first held in 1997 and now in its 17th year, is not only popular among Japanese living in Penang, but is also a huge event eagerly looked forward to by the local residents. During the event, members of the Women’s Club of the Penang Japanese Association performed the bon dance, while students from the Penang Japanese School played the wadaiko Japanese drums on stage set up at the center of the field. This was followed by Malaysian students who performed Yosakoi Soran-bushi Japanese folk songs Numerous Japanese food and game stalls were also set up. An eight-member Japanese team from TORAY Group (Malaysia) attended to the goldfish scooping stall, a Japanese traditional game in any Bon Odori Festival. The Group members really had a great time interacting with the Japanese residing in Penang as well as the local Penangnites. The highlight of the festival was unquestionably the fireworks display which commenced sharp at 10PM. The colourful fireworks brightened up the night sky of the Esplanade, to the enlightenment of the wild crowds. The Bon Odori Festival 2013 concluded with Lucky draws and Karaoke sessions. It was truly a night to remember.
