Toray Jointly Wins Special Award at Green Logistics Partnership Conference

Tokyo, Japan, December 17, 2020 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it and UPR Corporation jointly received the Special Award under the Excellent Green Logistics Commendation Program at the 2020 Green Logistics Partnership Conference. The prize was in recognition of Toray becoming the first company to use smart pallets incorporating active tags from UPR to integrate pallet transportation. The conference bestows this award on behalf of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and other entities in recognition of corporate contributions to sustainable logistics systems by lowering environmental impacts and enhancing logistics productivity. One factor in bestowing this award on Toray and UPR was that the carbon dioxide emissions saving from transportation as a result of a more efficient pallet recovery network was 197 metric tons annually. Another factor was that this active tag approach has improved working conditions and productivity by relieving truck drivers of the need to handle cargo manually while shortening loading and unloading times.

Key outcomes from using smart pallets incorporating active tags
Carbon dioxide emissions lowered 83%, or 197 metric tons annually
Product loading and unloading times reduced 75%, or 23,788 hours annually
Work efficiency improved through 100% work time reduction, saving 1,584 hours annually
Truck standby times cut 38%, or 5,947 hours annually
Bag damage down 35%, or 148 incidents annually
Toray’s logistics policy
Toray will continue stepping up collaboration with other parties to further the cause of green logistics—lowering the environmental impacts of related processes and endeavoring to reduce resulting carbon dioxide emissions. The company will address rising shortages of truck drivers by taking part in the White Logistics Movement, which seeks to enhance the productivity of trucking operations and streamline logistics while improving working conditions for women and drivers older than 60.
