Toray’s Ultrasuede®nu Adopted for Mazda6
-Used as automobile interior material for the first time-
Toray Industries, Inc. (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Akihiro Nikkaku; hereinafter referred to as “Toray”) today announced that Ultrasuede®nu, a hybrid nonwoven ultra-fine fiber material that combines the luster of grain leather and a smooth suede touch, manufactured by Toray, was adopted for the high-grade model (L Package) of the Mazda6 (known as Mazda Atenza in Japan) by Mazda Motor Corporation (head office: Aki-gun, Hiroshima, Japan; President: Masamichi Kogai; hereinafter referred to as “Mazda”) for the vehicle’s instrument panel and door panels.
This is the first time in the world that Ultrasuede®nu has been used as automobile interior material.
The Mazda6 is the flagship model of Mazda’s passenger car lineup. The model update is aimed at realizing driving pleasure, and all areas, including the interior and exterior design, performance feel and safety, were enhanced based on Mazda’s human-centered development philosophy. While the model still embodies the brand’s emotive KODO—Soul of Motion design language, the new design is based on a concept of “Mature Elegance,” enhancing the premium look of the Mazda6 and expressing a sense of mature serenity.
Ultrasuede®nu combines the functionality sought in automobile interior material such as color fastness and abrasion resistance and sensitivity such as fine and smooth suede texture and grain leather-like luster. These features realized the concept of the Mazda6 and created a composed brown with a hint of lightness and gorgeous white. Mazda adopted it as the company judged that the material matched its emphasis on design materials.
Under its Long-Term Corporate Vision AP-Growth TORAY 2020, the Toray Group lists “Toray as a leader in advanced materials” as one of the corporate images it aims to achieve, and has been working on the development of high-performance and high-sensitivity advanced materials by deploying core technologies including polymer technology and synthetic organic chemistry.
Marketed globally by Toray, Ultrasuede® is a non-woven material with a suede texture, an advanced product made using optimum Japanese quality. Through continuous technological advancements, Ultrasuede® has evolved as a highly functional material not only for fashion and interior designs, but also for automotive and aircraft interiors, sports gear and accessories for smartphones and mobile devices.
Toray will continue to evolve Ultrasuede® towards a future full of “Beautiful Possibilities”
