One-stop printing thanks to the world’s first ozone-free waterless UV printing system.

Waterless printing with ozone-free UV has now made its world debut. The Heidelberg Speedmaster SM-74-4H LE-UV machine, located on the sixth floor of the Osaka branch of Shinnihon Printing Inc. just seven minutes walk from Osaka’s Sakaisuji-Hommachi Station, operates at a rate of 13,000 rotations per hour under conditions of a single UV light source of 150W lamp (60% use). Especially in the case of double-side printing, use is made of half-sheet work in which one side is printed, after which the other side is then printed, allowing printing with just four plates, an advance over perfecting presses. Located on the same floor is a cutting machine, folding machine, saddle stitcher and adhesive binding machine, allowing fully integrated operations for completion in a smaller workspace and with shorter production times. “In an industry where only wet offset UV machines are gaining attention, we’ve taken the first step toward waterless UV,” says company President Toshikazu Sano.

All presses from web to sheet-fed have now been printing waterless

Shinnihon Printing Inc. completed its Tokyo Plant in Haneda in 2006, since then all presses from web to sheet-fed have now been printing waterless and attracting attention as a model plant, printing with a reduced environmental burden. Five years later, the company created a new operational base in Osaka’s centrally located Chuo-ku, with its sights set on further advancing one-stop printing operations. “Waterless UV printing aims for one-stop printing with printing applications not possible with oil-based inks. By offering one-stop operations, we’ll be able to increase business with new customers,” says Sano. Production Department Manager Yoshiteru Iritani emphasizes the new system’s environmental superiority. “By combining ozone-free UV printing with waterless printing we’ve achieved powder less printing with no ozone odor, which creates such a clean working environment you’d never guess that offset presses are operating,” he says.

The PRINT MEISTER print shop on the Osaka branch’s first floor takes advantage of the ideal location in central Osaka to cater to a large clientele including business people and creative staff in the neighboring apparel businesses. Customers placing orders on the first floor can speedily pick up their printed goods on the fifth floor where the on-demand output machines are located. The company also has a service for printing variable data on UV printed materials. Iritani points out how the powder less process results in an ideal chemistry between offset printing and digital printing. Ever since the company started up its one-stop printing service in the business district, more people have been visiting the plant and there’s been a steady increase in customers. This year the company hired 29 college grads at all its bases, including nine college grads at its Osaka branch alone. President Sano is engaged in active hiring to train people who can handle all aspects of operations from sales and compilation to final production.
